Understanding the Person Behind the Profession

Gincy MK is a dedicated Social Work professional with a postgraduate background in Medical and Psychiatry Social Work and practical exposure to hospital social work, mental health services, psychosocial interventions, counselling, community outreach, awareness programmes and rehabilitation.

She holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) in Medical and Psychiatry from De Paul Institute of Science & Technology, Angamaly, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from NSS College, Cherthala.

Her professional training and field experience have provided her with exposure to case history taking, Mental Status Examination (MSE), psychosocial assessment, counselling, psychoeducation, group therapy, case management, community outreach, rehabilitation programmes and mental health awareness activities.

Her professional interests include mental health, psychosocial wellbeing, counselling, community mental health, behavioural understanding, rehabilitation, child and family wellbeing, social development and mental health promotion.

She approaches her work with an emphasis on empathy, active listening, effective communication and person-centred psychosocial support, with an interest in supporting individuals, families and communities in addressing psychological and social challenges.

Clinical & Professional Exposure

Social Work Trainee – Louise Mount Hospital, Wayanad

Her clinical exposure included case history taking, MSE, interaction with patients and family members, and participation in an anti-drug awareness programme conducted as part of the hospital’s community mental health activities. She also received exposure to working with psychotic, neurotic and substance use disorder patients.

Social Work Trainee – St. John’s Medical College Hospital, Bengaluru

Her training included patient socio-demographic assessment, psychosocial intervention, counselling, ward visits, case presentations, case discussions, literature review, report writing, record maintenance and rehabilitation programmes. She also participated in the IVDP project at Krishnagiri, assisted in blood donation camps and coordinated hospital-based programmes.

Social Work Trainee – Cardinal Specialty Hospital, Monippally

She facilitated psychoeducation classes and group therapy sessions and gained firsthand exposure to case history taking, MSE and counselling. Her placement included exposure to psychiatry, clinical psychology, de-addiction and counselling.

Her field experience included case management, community outreach and group work.

Her dissertation, “Correlation between Animated Cartoons and Violent Behavior in Children,” examined the relationship between exposure to animated cartoons and behavioural patterns among children using social work research methods and data analysis.

She has also presented the research paper at SAMANWAYA International Conference on compassionate intelligence for child protection.

Academic & Professional Engagement

Gincy has contributed to academic and professional activities including international conferences, community awareness programmes, fieldwork initiatives and social work-related academic projects.

She served as Sub Editor of the Compendium of Abstracts for De Novo 2025, an international conference on Reimagining Families: Shifting Paradigms in Social Work Practice, organised by the School of Social Work in collaboration with James Cook University, Australia and the University of Notre Dame, Australia.

She has also participated in national and international conferences covering green social work, resilience, disaster management, climate change adaptation and child protection.
